Safnahúsið, originally built as the national library, is now part of the National Museum. In the Höfði house, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev met in 1986. On the Öskjuhlíð hill stands Perlan, opened in 1991 on top of hot-water tanks and with a viewing platform. The Árbær open-air museum grew out of a former farm.
About 40 kilometres east lies Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. On the Reykjanes peninsula near Grindavík is the Blue Lagoon geothermal pool.
