Lübeck lies on the Trave near the Baltic Sea and was a centre of the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages. The old town island has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. To the west it is bounded by the Holstentor, completed in 1478 and today the city's landmark.St. Jakobi was built in 1334 as the church of seafarers and fishermen. The Heiligen-Geist-Hospital is one of the oldest hospitals in Europe. Since 2015, the European Hansemuseum has told the story of the Hanseatic League. The Günter Grass House and the Willy Brandt House recall the two Nobel laureates.
On the Untertrave, restored sailing ships lie in the museum harbour in front of the old town. In the Travemünde district, the four-masted barque Passat, launched at Blohm & Voss in 1911, lies as a museum ship.
