Fehmarn is a Baltic Sea island between the Bay of Kiel and the Bay of Mecklenburg. It covers about 185 square kilometres and has around 78 kilometres of coastline. Since 2003, the whole island has formed the town of Fehmarn, with Burg as its main town. Dunes and coastal lakes shape the north coast, a stony cliff coast the east, and flat sandy beaches the south near Burgtiefe.Since 1963, the Fehmarn Sound Bridge has linked the island to the mainland by road and rail; its shape earned it the nickname "coat hanger". In Burg stands St Nicholas' Church, built around 1230. In the harbour of Burgstaaken, the submarine U 11 is open as a museum. The Lemkenhafen mill museum is housed in an old windmill.
Five lighthouses stand on the coast, and the Flügge lighthouse in the southwest is open to visitors. In the west lies the Wallnau waterbird reserve, and on the north coast the Grüner Brink nature reserve. At Gammendorfer Strand, a memorial recalls the sail training ship Niobe, which sank off the coast in 1932. Kitesurfers use the Orther Reede and the Grüner Brink.
