Monschau lies in the Eifel in the narrow Rur valley, in the south of the Aachen city region near the Belgian border. The old town with its half-timbered houses lines the river closely.Above the town stands Monschau Castle, a hilltop castle from around 1200. Opposite it lies the Haller, a fortification from the 13th century. In the 18th century, cloth makers brought prosperity: the Red House was the family seat of the Scheiblers and is now a museum, and Haus Troistorff was built in 1783. The historic mustard mill is a listed group of buildings, and the city region's Photography Forum shows photography exhibitions.
Many nature reserves surround Monschau, including the 331-hectare Perlenbach-Fuhrtsbach valley and the upper Rur valley with the Ehrensteinsley rocks. Between Mützenich and the Belgian border, the land rises to the Venn plateau.
