Aachen lies in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia on the border with Belgium and the Netherlands. Charlemagne had his palace built here. Its surviving core is Aachen Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. The town hall's façade shows 50 figures of rulers, 31 of whom were crowned in Aachen. The cathedral treasury holds the cathedral's works of art and relics. The Centre Charlemagne in the former palace district tells the city's history. The Elisenbrunnen is a neoclassical colonnade designed by Johann Peter Cremer and Karl Friedrich Schinkel; water from one of the city's more than 30 thermal springs flows from it.
Of the medieval city fortifications, the Ponttor and Marschiertor gates survive. The Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum shows art from antiquity to classical modernism, and the Ludwig Forum shows contemporary art. Frankenberg Castle was once a moated castle.
