Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and lies on a bay of the Tagus estuary. After the earthquake of 1755, the lower town of Baixa was rebuilt, opening onto the Praça do Comércio by the river. The Elevador de Santa Justa, completed in 1902, connects Baixa with the higher Chiado district. The Castelo de São Jorge fortress encloses the ruins of a castle. In the Belém district stands the Jerónimos Monastery, a building in the Manueline style, Portugal's late Gothic. Vasco da Gama and Fernando Pessoa are among those buried there. Also in Belém, the MAAT on the Tagus, opened in 2016, shows art, architecture and technology. The ruined church of the Convento do Carmo, destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, now houses an archaeological museum.
The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum shows art from all periods from its founder's collection. The Museu Nacional do Azulejo is devoted to Portugal's typical ceramic tiles. The Oceanário lies on the former Expo 98 grounds. The stone arches of the 18th-century Aqueduto das Águas Livres span the Alcântara valley.
