Seville is the capital of Andalusia and lies on the Guadalquivir. The cathedral, the Alcázar and the Archive of the Indies have together been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The cathedral was begun in 1401 and is the largest Gothic church in Spain; it holds the tomb of Christopher Columbus. The Alcázar is the city's royal palace. Its history goes back to Moorish times, and the Spanish royal family still uses it today. Between the cathedral and the Alcázar, the Archivo General de Indias has kept records of the Spanish colonial empire in the Americas and the Philippines since 1785.
In the old town, the Casa de Pilatos combines Mudéjar and Renaissance forms and is considered the model of the Andalusian noble palace. On Plaza de la Encarnación stands the Metropol Parasol of wood, concrete and steel, completed in 2011 and known locally as "Las Setas". By the river are the Torre del Oro, a tower of the old city defences that stands on its own, and the baroque Hospital de la Santa Caridad from the 17th century.
