Sylt lies off the coast of North Frisia and is linked to the mainland by the Hindenburgdamm. Since 1927 only trains have used the causeway; cars travel on the car train. The municipality of Sylt includes Westerland and the villages of Keitum, Tinnum, Morsum, Archsum, Munkmarsch and Rantum. The Wadden Sea on the island's east side has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.In Keitum stands the church of St. Severin, named after a 4th-century bishop of Cologne. Nearby are the Stone Age grave Harhoog and the Altfriesisches Haus, a museum right on the mudflats. In Westerland, beach warden Wulf Hansen Decker laid out the Cemetery of the Homeless in 1854 for bodies washed ashore. In the south of the town, the Sylt Aquarium shows fish from the North Sea and from tropical reefs.
In the east of the island, between the Hindenburgdamm and Keitum, lies the Morsum Cliff. South of Westerland, the Rantum Basin, a brackish lake, is protected as a nature reserve.
