Sankt Peter-Ording lies in the southwest of the Eiderstedt peninsula on the North Sea. The beach is up to twelve kilometres long and, at low tide, up to two kilometres wide. It formed when two sandbanks joined the mainland. Buildings on stilts stand on the beach; the first was built in 1911.

The pier in the Bad district runs just over a kilometre from the dyke across salt marsh and beach to one of the stilt buildings. The stilt buildings and the lighthouse in the Böhl district are the village's landmarks. St Peter's Church in the Dorf district dates from around 1200. The village has the museum of the Eiderstedt region, an amber museum and the Westküstenpark, an animal park with seals.

Part of the municipality lies in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, which belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Behind the dyke, a belt of dunes was planted with trees from 1826 to stop drifting sand. The wide beach is also used for kitesurfing and sand yachting. The village has had a railway connection since 1932.
