Cologne lies on the Rhine and goes back to the Roman town of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. Cologne Cathedral is the seat of the archdiocese and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996; the treasury on its north side holds a large part of the cathedral treasure. Since 2021, the Lower German Limes, the former frontier of the Roman Empire, has also been World Heritage.Of the Roman city wall, the Römerturm with its mosaics survives. St. Gereon is one of the city's twelve large Romanesque churches. Next to the cathedral, the Museum Ludwig shows art of the 20th and 21st centuries, and the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum is the city's oldest museum. The Chocolate Museum lies in the Rheinauhafen.
The Cologne cable car crosses the Rhine over 935 metres; it was built for the Federal Garden Show in 1957. Cologne Zoo in the Riehl district was founded in 1860. The NS Documentation Centre recalls the city during the Nazi era.
