Bern is the federal city of Switzerland. Its old town, set in a loop of the Aare, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. It includes the 16th-century figure fountains such as the Kindlifresser Fountain and the French Church. The Kornhaus, a former granary, is now a cultural centre.

On Helvetiaplatz south of the Aare are the Bern Historical Museum, the Swiss Alpine Museum and the Kunsthalle Bern. The Kunstmuseum Bern stands at the edge of the old town. Brown bears have lived in the Bear Park on the bank of the Aare since 2009.

Paths along the Aare lead to parks such as the Elfenau. On the outskirts stand the 15th-century Holligen Castle and the New Castle of Bümpliz.
