Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol and lies in the Inn valley. Its landmark is the Golden Roof in the old town, a late Gothic oriel whose roof is covered with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles. A few steps away are the Hofburg, once a Habsburg residence and seat of the rulers of Tyrol, and St. James' Cathedral.

The Court Church was built from 1553 to 1563 for the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I. Because of its large bronze figures, locals also call it the "Schwarzmanderkirche", the church of the black men. At the Tirol Panorama on Bergisel, the giant panorama painting from 1896 shows the Battle of Bergisel of 13 August 1809.

Ambras Castle lies on the south-eastern edge of the city. The Alpine Zoo shows animals of the Alps at an altitude of around 750 metres. In town, the ten-hectare Hofgarten next to the Hofburg is a good place for a break; on Maria-Theresien-Strasse, St. Anne's Column commemorates the withdrawal of Bavarian troops in 1703.
